Obituary for George Malcolm Savage

George Malcolm Savage finished his earthly life February 13, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was a leader in his church and community and will be fondly remembered for his generosity, work ethic, business sense, and his love and devotion for God, his church, and his family. He set a strong example for many to follow, persevering through hard times and humble good times. He was born October 24th, 1930 to William Washington and Alice Vance Savage in Doyle,Tennessee. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, with 3 years of active duty. He had a successful career in the clothing manufacturing business spanning over 62 years, including 20 years as Eastern Division Manager with Spartan Manufacturing, 22 years as a managing partner of Sutton Shirt Company, and 12 years as president of River States Inc, where he retired.

George was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church, and also a leader in the community. He was Past Master at Masonic Lodge #496 in Byrdstown, TN. He also was a member of the White County Shriners Club. He spent 18 years as a board member for the Cookeville Rescue Mission. George was very involved in the local business economy, serving on the White Co Industrial Board for 18 years and the White Co Economic Development Board. He also was a member of the White / Van Buren Cattlemen's Association. Upon retirement, he spent the majority of his years raising Polled Hereford Cattle, and enjoyed every minute of it.

He married his beautiful bride, Helen Baker, on January 23, 1953, and has spent the last 64 years growing the family that he has today.

George is survived by his wife Helen Baker Savage, children Samuel Mark (Pamela Rogers) of Sparta and Cynthia Ann Savage Parks (Keith) of Raleigh, NC, 9 grandchildren, Jonathan Mark Savage, Jacob Daniel Savage (Mary Ann Murdock), Jody Michael Savage, Jenny Elizabeth Savage, Julie Katelyn Savage, John Keith Parks Jr (Jack), William Savage Parks, Houston Savage Parks, and Reed Walter Parks. 3 great grandchildren Jackson Ryan Savage, Peyton Hope Savage, and Deacon Gage Savage. Sister in law Sally Bell Savage, niece Alice Nicole Savage Acord (Chris) and great nephew Miles Savage Acord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Leslie Michelle Savage, sisters Gladys Savage Davis, Thelma Savage Pyle, Rhea Savage, Mattie Savage Felker, brothers Samuel Hugh Savage, Haskell William Savage, nephew Calvin Lynn Pyle, Samuel Wayne Pyle, William Cos Davis, Barney Davis, Sr., James Ray Davis, Grandparents George Washington and Cynthia Adair Savage, and John and Mary Jane Hodges Vance.

Services will be held at 4:00PM on Saturday, February 16 at First Baptist Church 308 North Spring St, Sparta TN, with visitation from 2:00-4:00PM also at First Baptist.
