Obituary for Hugh "Hootie" Dion Turner

It is with great sadness and extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mr. Hugh Turner, age 80, of Sparta, TN. Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed way on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Hootie, as he was best known, was born and raised in Pikeville, TN, served his country in the US Army, was a truck driver for many years, retired from Ben Lomand in Sparta, TN, and was a well loved figure in his community.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Miller Turner; his wonderful children, Patsy Roberts (David) and Stacy Turner (Debbie); his amazing grandchildren, Jacob Roberts (Fallon), McKinzi Turner (Arthur O'Connor), Caleb Roberts (Kaylie), Haley Tollison (Kayne), and Ethan Turner; and his adored great-grandchildren, Ranger Roberts, Walker Tollison, Anderson Roberts, and Westen O'Connor. Throughout his life, he has been blessed to be surrounded by the love of multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and some very special friends. Hootie lived a very full life that was filled with joy, love, laughter, and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and extended family members.

Hootie had a love for fishing, farming, and being outdoors. Whether he was making the calls on the basketball court, keeping you straight out on a ballfield, or watching his beloved VOLS, he loved all sports and could always be found checking a score, talking about sports, or watching sports. He spent many years traveling this country behind the wheel of a semi or traveling with his wife and family. He loved to man the grill and would feed anyone that dropped by, enjoyed visiting with his friends each morning over a biscuit and cup of coffee at Jose's, was always eager to help a friend or neighbor in need, and never missed an opportunity to cheer on or support his babies in whatever endeavor they were trying. Hootie was always up for driving a tractor or truck if help was needed, did not mind having to put in a hard day's work, had wonderful stories to share of his days racing around a track, and still enjoyed going to catch one on a dirt track when he could. He enjoyed working with children and spent endless hours encouraging them and helping them to learn and grow. But most importantly, he loved his family and friends wholeheartedly; and he was always the first to call to say he was checking on you and he loved you.

Hootie was a blessing to all who knew him. His family cherish having been a part of his story, and grateful for his love and support, and we will all continue to live each day trying to honor him and his legacy. We will miss him dearly and will always keep him in our hearts.
