David was my first boss at a 40 hr. Job after high school at Sparta Spoke. David was in charge of the lumber yard and I was to be his helper. It was the middle of summer and so hot . My job was to stack lumber as he graded it and counted it. I probably weighed 110 lbs soakin wet and most of the boards were in the 40-50 lb. range or so it seemed to me. Needless to say it was a rough job. Well I worked the yard for a couple of weeks and then I think they had pity on me and gave me a job Inside the factory. Later I accused Dave jokingly of trying to burn me out. My dad worked in the factory and I think he told Dave to put me to it and see if I would burn out. He sure put me to it and I held on. Dave was a good friend and neighbor to me for many years as Sue and I lived in Mt. Gilead. I’ll never forget him. He was a great man.
